Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead

About Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead


Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead brings more than 40 years of law enforcement experience across public, private, and higher‑education sectors. A native of Asheboro, he began his career as a Deputy Sheriff before joining Duke University Public Safety, where he rose through the ranks to become Chief of Police. His leadership strengthened community partnerships, modernized operations, and expanded public safety services across Durham. He later served as Chief of Police in Hillsborough and held senior safety leadership roles in the private sector and higher education. Sheriff Birkhead holds degrees from Shaw University and Pfeiffer University and remains committed to advancing professional excellence and community trust in public safety.
